Kingston college has announced a tattoo artistry course for students starting in 2017/18 in effort to respond to the demands of their student body.
The course was developed to provide an alternative to the shorter classes available and enhance employment opportunities for those wanting to go down that specific career path.
Catherine Howett, head of the college’s creative industries, stated: “The world of tattoo artistry is a flourishing one, and we believe our students will be able to progress into freelance work or take up a time honoured Industry apprenticeship.”
Students also had their say in how the course should be structured, as the college staff believe it is fundamental to allow pupils to actively contribute to the shaping of their courses.
Strong academic and business skills will be built along the duration of the course as well as creative attributes to mould the independent tattooist.
“The course is designed to build relevant art skills that will support the creative identity of the artist,” says Howett. “We are very passionate about tattoo artistry and are excited to work with young artists.”
The college expects to see a lot of applications and the course has excited many creatives across the Kingston borough, including photographer Paul Mowatt who stated he found the course to be ‘interesting and unique’.
The rich historic value of tattooing will be taught in addition to equipment familiarisation, and the college believes this is what will set their course apart from others available.
“In their final year lots of the students are drawn to tattoo artistry,” Catherine states. “We have built a course that frames this exciting tradition in a firm art and design basis.”
